BGPF022 | Phonics N

By Dr. Rajeev Tamhankar

This activity, called the “Nose Detective,” is designed to introduce young children to the letter “N” and its phonetic sound “na” by associating it with the sense of smell. Children explore items with distinct smells while learning to recognize and pronounce the sound “na” through engaging sensory play.

  • Introduce the Letter and Sound: Begin by showing a flashcard with the letter “N” and introducing the “na” sound, using words like “nose,” “nest,” and “nut.”
  • Explain the Activity: Tell the children they will be “nose detectives” who use their noses to identify various items.
  • Blindfold and Smell Test: Blindfold the child to make it more exciting, then let them smell different items like flowers, soap, or coffee beans.
  • Identify Items: As each item is smelled, have the child say “N for nose, na” and try to guess the item.
  • Reinforce the Sound: With each item, emphasize the “na” sound and encourage them to name other words starting with “N.”

This activity helps children:

  1. Associate the “N” sound with the letter and objects.
  2. Develop sensory skills by exploring different smells.
  3. Improve phonetic recognition in a playful, memorable way.
  • Keep the activity light and engaging by offering positive feedback.
  • Let kids take turns guessing to add a sense of friendly competition.
  • Use items with strong, distinct smells to make the guessing easier and more fun.
  • Flashcard with the letter “N”
  • Blindfold
  • Scented items like flowers, soap, coffee beans, fruits, or perfume
