BGPF043 I Phonics T

By Dr. Rajeev Tamhankar and Riddhi Chincholikar

In this engaging relay activity, participants rush back and forth carrying tomatoes from a starting point to a designated soft toy. Each time they reach the toy, they place a tomato beside it and then return for another. This process continues until all tomatoes are transferred. The activity focuses on associating the sound “T” and the word “tomato” with fun and movement.

  • Set a starting point and place a bowl with several tomatoes (real or plastic) at the start line.
  • Place a soft toy or plush target a short distance from the starting point.
  • Have each participant pick up one tomato at a time, rush to the toy, place the tomato beside it, and shout “T for tomato.”
  • Return to the start line, grab another tomato, and repeat until all tomatoes are moved.
  • Celebrate the completion with a loud cheer or clap, emphasizing the sound and letter association.

This activity helps toddlers:

  1. Improve their coordination and motor skills through the rushing and placing of items.
  2. Strengthen sound and letter association with the word “tomato” and the letter “T,” enhancing early language skills.
  3. Enjoy an interactive, playful experience that connects movement with learning sounds and letters.
  • Use plastic or plush tomatoes for safe and easy handling.
  • Adjust the number of tomatoes based on the child’s age and stamina.
  • Make it competitive for older toddlers by timing the relay.
  • Encourage participants to say “T for tomato” loudly to reinforce the sound association.
  • Keep the distance short to avoid tiring the child out quickly.
  • Bowl with tomatoes (real, plastic, or plush)
  • Soft toy or plush target
  • Small open space for safe running
