BGPF049 | Pretend play(1-2)

By Dr. Rajeev Tamhankar

The “World Map Explorer” activity introduces young children to geography by taking them on a pretend journey across different countries around the world. Children will explore flags and, optionally, animals, monuments, or currencies associated with each nation, helping them to connect more deeply with world cultures through interactive play.

Airplane Rides with Parent’s Help

  • Experience: With slightly more control over their bodies, toddlers can enjoy more exciting (but still gentle) lifts.
  • Activity: Lie on your back and place the toddler on your shins. Holding their hands, lift them up like a little airplane and gently rock or sway. You can make airplane noises and say, “Let’s fly to the zoo!”
  • Props: Use soft scarves as pretend wings or seatbelts. You can also make a “pilot hat” out of paper.
  • Story Element: Talk about flying to different destinations, such as “Now we’re flying to the beach!” as you pretend to land.

This activity enhances children’s cognitive development by introducing them to basic geography, flags, and cultural symbols. It supports sensory learning and strengthens connections with different global regions in a playful, immersive manner.

  • For a more interactive experience, try pairing each destination with a relevant sensory element (e.g., playing soft Indian music when visiting India or showing a soft toy bear for Germany).
  • Encourage hands-on activities at each stop, such as “making cloth” for India or “sailing a dragon boat” for China, to boost engagement.
  • World map poster (included in the kit)
  • Flag flashcards (for countries like USA, India, Japan, etc.)
  • Soft toys or animal figurines
