BGPF052 | Pretend play(4-5)

By Dr. Rajeev Tamhankar

The “World Map Explorer” activity introduces young children to geography by taking them on a pretend journey across different countries around the world. Children will explore flags and, optionally, animals, monuments, or currencies associated with each nation, helping them to connect more deeply with world cultures through interactive play.

  • Experience: This age is great for a structured pretend-play experience where they can act out different roles.
  • Activity: Create a mini “check-in” area where they get their “tickets” and “passport” stamped. Afterward, let them sit in a line of chairs, pretending it’s an airplane, with one of you as the pilot and them as the passenger.
  • Props: Use a world map to show them their “destination,” play airplane sounds, and even give them a small snack for an in-flight meal.
  • Story Element: Make it a group “trip” to different countries, describing animals or famous landmarks they “see” along the way, like “We’re flying over the Eiffel Tower!”

This activity enhances children’s cognitive development by introducing them to basic geography, flags, and cultural symbols. It supports sensory learning and strengthens connections with different global regions in a playful, immersive manner.

  • For a more interactive experience, try pairing each destination with a relevant sensory element (e.g., playing soft Indian music when visiting India or showing a soft toy bear for Germany).
  • Encourage hands-on activities at each stop, such as “making cloth” for India or “sailing a dragon boat” for China, to boost engagement.
  • World map poster (included in the kit)
  • Flag flashcards (for countries like USA, India, Japan, etc.)
  • Soft toys or animal figurines
