BGPF080 | Harvard Grant

By Dr. Rajeev Tamhankar

The Harvard Grant activity introduces children to the concept of philanthropy and social responsibility. Participants will simulate decision-making as part of a charitable grant committee, selecting projects that benefit society. This activity promotes empathy, critical thinking, and collaborative skills.

  • Setup: Prepare a list of fictional grant proposals that outline various social projects (e.g., building schools, improving clean water access).
  • Divide Roles: Assign participants roles as committee members who will review and discuss the proposals.
  • Discussion: Allow participants to debate the merits of each project, focusing on its societal impact, feasibility, and budget.
  • Decision Making: Facilitate a group vote to determine which project(s) should receive the grant funding.
  • Reflection: Conclude with a discussion on the importance of giving back and the impact of their decisions.
  • Social-Emotional Skills: Encourages empathy and understanding of societal needs.
  • Critical Thinking: Enhances decision-making and analytical skills.
  • Collaboration: Promotes teamwork and consensus-building.
  • Financial Awareness: Introduces the concept of budgeting and resource allocation.
  • Keep the proposals diverse to cater to varied interests (e.g., environmental, educational, healthcare).
  • Provide visual aids or data for each proposal to make the decision-making process more engaging.
  • Encourage participants to share personal insights or experiences related to the proposals.
  • Use a timer to ensure discussions remain focused and productive.
  • Printed or digital copies of fictional grant proposals.
  • Voting tools (e.g., hand signals, paper ballots, or a digital poll).
  • Whiteboard or chart paper for listing project details and votes.
  • Pens, markers, and sticky notes for participants to jot down thoughts.
