KBGPF009 | Baby Milestones

By Dr. Rajeev Tamhankar

This session explores essential baby milestones, focusing on three significant developmental stages: crawling, walking, and talking. It explains typical milestone timelines, methods to encourage development, and supportive practices for each phase. Each milestone includes ways to engage the baby in activities that foster physical, cognitive, and communication skills while emphasizing the importance of not forcing the child and understanding each baby’s unique pace.

  • Crawling Support:
    1. Tummy Time: Place the baby on their belly daily to strengthen neck, back, and core muscles.
    2. Toy Reach: Position toys slightly out of reach to encourage the baby to move.
    3. Space for Exploration: Ensure a safe, spacious area for the baby to crawl.
    4. Physical Support: Stabilize their feet with your palms when they’re on all fours to help them balance.
  • Walking Support:
    1. Furniture Support: Allow the baby to pull up and hold onto sturdy furniture.
    2. Trunk Support: Instead of holding their hands, support their trunk when they’re learning to walk.
    3. Encourage Barefoot Walking: Let the baby walk barefoot to help develop their muscle strength and balance.
  • Talking Support:
    1. Face-to-Face Interaction: Hold the baby close and talk to them while making eye contact.
    2. Repeat Words: Name objects clearly, such as “apple” or “banana,” to increase vocabulary.
    3. Play Games: Engage in turn-taking games like peekaboo and repeat simple nursery rhymes with actions.
  • Physical Development: Promotes muscle strength, coordination, and balance essential for crawling and walking.
  • Cognitive Development: Enhances recognition, listening, and processing skills needed for communication.
  • Motor Skills: Activities like reaching for toys and pulling up on furniture improve fine and gross motor skills.
  • Social Skills: Games like peekaboo and interactive songs foster engagement and early social cues.
  • Be Patient: Allow the baby to progress naturally without pushing milestones too early.
  • Consistent Tummy Time: Avoid tummy time immediately after feeding; aim for several sessions throughout the day.
  • Use Descriptive Language: Speak clearly and avoid baby talk to help them learn proper words.
  • Involve Favorite Toys: Use the baby’s favorite toys to make activities more engaging.
  • Celebrate Small Progress: Encouragement boosts confidence and motivation.
  • Toys: Soft and safe toys that catch the baby’s interest.
  • Child-Proofed Space: A safe and spacious area free from hazards.
  • Supportive Furniture: Low furniture or railings they can use for balance.
  • Nursery Rhymes and Storybooks: Simple books or audio with songs to stimulate language.
  • Soft Mats: For tummy time and walking practice.
