Finger Gesture Storytelling using the poem “Five Little Ducks” combines storytelling, singing, and finger movements to teach counting, animal sounds, and rhythm. This engaging activity enhances motor skills, auditory recognition, and social interaction while encouraging language development.

  • Introduction: Begin by explaining the story of “Five Little Ducks.”
  • Counting & Gestures:
    1. Show five fingers on one hand, wiggling them as ducks.
    2. As each duck swims away, fold one finger down.
    3. Mimic the mother duck calling by opening and closing your hand like a beak.
  • Singing & Storytelling:
    1. Sing the poem with actions:
“Five little ducks went swimming one day,
Over the hills and far away.
Mother duck said, ‘Quack, quack, quack, quack,’
But only four little ducks came back.”
    2. Continue counting down until no ducks return, then bring all five ducks back in the end.
  • Closure: Reinforce the counting by showing all five fingers and counting them aloud.
  • Cognitive Development: Improves counting, memory, and pattern recognition.
  • Motor Skills: Enhances fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination.
  • Language & Communication: Strengthens vocabulary, auditory recognition, and social interaction.
  • Emotional Engagement: Encourages interactive play, bonding, and creative expression.
  • Use a rhythmic tone and consistent actions for better engagement.
  • Encourage the baby to mimic gestures and sounds.
  • Repeat the story for reinforcement.
  • Adjust the pace based on the child’s interest and response.

None (optional: printout of the poem, props like duck finger puppets).
