KBGPF021 | Baby Music

By Dr. Rajeev Tamhankar

This activity focuses on passive listening to soothing and melodious music designed for babies. It incorporates a mix of Indian classical music (Ragas), Western classical pieces, and nursery rhymes to promote relaxation and well-being in infants. The music is specifically chosen based on research that highlights its positive effects on babies, especially those in neonatal care. The activity is meant to be played in the background, creating a calming environment for the baby.

  1. Choose the Music: Select a combination of Ragas, Western classical music, and nursery rhymes based on the baby’s preference or previous exposure.
    • Indian Classical: Raga like Sagara and Yemen for calmness and joy.
    • Western Classical: Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9 – Ode to Joy and Mozart’s Eine Kleine Nachtmusik for uplifting energy.
    • Nursery Rhymes: Choose familiar rhymes that the baby may enjoy.
  2. Play the Music: Use a device like a phone, speaker, or computer to play the chosen music. Make sure the music is played softly in the background to create a peaceful atmosphere.
  3. Avoid Direct Exposure: The baby should not be actively watching the music; it should be passive listening, allowing the music to fill the room without requiring the baby’s attention.
  • Improved Respiratory Rate: Studies have shown that music exposure can regulate the baby’s breathing patterns, leading to a healthier respiratory rate.
  • Calmer Babies: Music helps soothe babies by lowering their pain sensitivity, leading to less crankiness and a more peaceful state.
  • Enhanced Bonding: The soothing sounds release oxytocin, the “love hormone,” which strengthens the emotional bond between the baby and the caregiver.
  • Consistency: Repeated exposure to the same music (especially if heard during pregnancy) can help the baby feel more at ease and familiar with the tunes.
  • Mix and Match: Alternate between Indian classical music, Western classical, and rhymes to gauge which type of music resonates best with your baby.
  • Background Music: Ensure that the music is played softly in the background rather than directly in the baby’s line of sight, allowing it to create a calming atmosphere without overwhelming the baby.
  • Music Player: A device (phone, tablet, speaker, etc.) to play music.
  • Music Selection: Pre-selected tracks like Indian classical Ragas, Western classical pieces (Beethoven, Mozart), and nursery rhymes.
  • YouTube or Music Platform: Use platforms like YouTube or Spotify for accessing the recommended music, with links to specific tracks available in the resources section.
  • Speaker/Headphones: For better sound quality, use a speaker that can distribute sound evenly across the room.
