KBGPF024 | Face Time for Babies

By Dr. Rajeev Tamhankar

FaceTime is a simple yet impactful activity designed to create face-to-face bonding moments with your baby. It involves engaging your baby through exaggerated facial expressions, playful sounds, and interactive communication, helping them develop emotional, social, and cognitive skills while strengthening your bond.

  • Setup: Sit in a quiet, comfortable space with your baby on your lap, facing you.
  • Expressions: Make exaggerated facial expressions such as smiling, frowning, or sticking out your tongue. Pause to let the baby observe and react.
  • Sounds: Incorporate playful sounds like animal noises (e.g., “moo,” “meow”) or soothing murmurs. Sing a lullaby if you like.
  • Interaction: Imitate your baby’s reactions to create a back-and-forth communication.
  • Repetition: Repeat expressions and sounds consistently to reinforce learning.
  1. Cognitive Development: Enhances observation, memory, and pattern recognition.
  2. Language Skills: Builds early language understanding by exposing the baby to tones and rhythms.
  3. Social Skills: Teaches emotional expression and fosters early communication skills.
  4. Bonding: Strengthens the emotional connection, making the baby feel safe and loved.
  • Be Animated: Use dramatic expressions to capture your baby’s attention.
  • Keep Sessions Short: Limit the activity to 5-10 minutes to avoid overstimulation.
  • Follow Baby’s Cues: If your baby shows disinterest or fatigue, pause or try again later.
  • Involve Variety: Alternate between expressions, sounds, and lullabies for engagement.
  • Make Eye Contact: Maintain a warm gaze to build trust and focus.
  • A comfortable chair or cushion.
  • A quiet, distraction-free space.
  • Optional: A mirror for you to observe and adjust your expressions.
