NBGPF003 | DIY Clock (2-6)

By Dr. Rajeev Tamhankar and Riddhi Chincholikar

The DIY Clock activity is a fun and engaging way for children to learn about time while enhancing their creativity and motor skills. By creating their own clock using simple materials, kids can understand how clocks function, recognize numbers, and develop a basic sense of time management.

  • Take a sturdy paper plate or cardboard and cut it into a circular shape.
  • Write or paste numbers 1 to 12 around the edge to represent the hours.
  • Cut out two arrow-shaped clock hands from colored paper or cardboard (one shorter for the hour hand and one longer for the minute hand).
  • Attach the hands to the center of the clock using a pushpin or paper fastener, allowing them to rotate.
  • Optionally, decorate the clock with stickers, colors, or drawings to make it more appealing.
  • Use the DIY clock to practice telling time by moving the hands to different positions and asking the child to read the time.
  • Enhances number recognition and counting skills.
  • Improves fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination.
  • Develops an early understanding of time concepts.
  • Encourages creativity and hands-on learning.
  • Strengthens problem-solving skills by engaging in a structured yet fun task.
  • Use a split pin (paper fastener) for easy movement of the clock hands.
  • Allow kids to choose their favorite colors and designs to make the activity more engaging.
  • Start with full hours before introducing minutes and half-hours.
  • Play interactive games by asking, “Can you set the clock to 3 o’clock?”
  • Reinforce learning by relating time to daily activities, such as meal times or bedtime.
  • Paper plate or cardboard
  • Colored paper or markers
  • Scissors
  • Glue or tape
  • Pushpin or paper fastener
  • Stickers or decorative items (optional)
