By Dr. Rajeev Tamhankar and Riddhi Chincholikar

The Jungle Bridge activity is a fun and engaging gross motor skill exercise designed to improve balance, coordination, and confidence in young children. It simulates a jungle adventure where children cross a “bridge” made of various materials, enhancing their sensory experience and problem-solving skills. This activity encourages movement, spatial awareness, and imaginative play while keeping the child entertained.

Setup

  • Create a “bridge” using a rope, tape, pillows, or wooden planks on the floor.
  • Place soft cushions or a play mat around the area for safety.
  • Add jungle-themed elements like stuffed animals, leaves, or vines for an immersive experience.

Introduce the Activity

  • Tell the child they are on a jungle adventure and need to cross the bridge carefully.
  • Demonstrate how to walk, crawl, or balance across the bridge.

Encourage Participation

  • Guide the child to cross the bridge using different movements (walking, tiptoeing, crawling).
  • Use fun sound effects like animal noises to enhance engagement.

Challenge and Play

  • Introduce obstacles like small gaps or stepping stones for an added challenge.
  • Encourage the child to balance while carrying a small toy or object.
  • Clap and cheer as they complete the course.
  • Enhances Balance & Coordination – Helps children develop stability and body control.
  • Improves Motor Skills – Strengthens leg and core muscles through movement.
  • Encourages Problem-Solving – Teaches children to navigate obstacles creatively.
  • Boosts Confidence – Builds self-assurance as they successfully cross the bridge.
  • Promotes Imaginative Play – Engages children in a fun storytelling experience.
  • Use a variety of materials (pillows, ropes, tape) to create different bridge textures.
  • Adjust the difficulty based on the child’s age and skill level.
  • Add storytelling elements to make the activity more engaging.
  • Always supervise to ensure safety.
  • Reward the child with a small cheer or sticker after completing the activity.
  • Rope, tape, pillows, or wooden planks for the bridge.
  • Soft mats or cushions for safety.
  • Jungle-themed props (stuffed animals, leaves, vines).
  • Small toys or objects to carry while crossing.
